This was a collaborative film production between Shanshan Cui, Dambo Jiang and Lorraine Cleary. The film was based on a short story titled “The Eternal Country” by Greg O’Shaughnessy (above image is a still from the film).

EMPHASIS ON WHAT’S REAL AND NOT REAL. A TENSION EXISTS BETWEEN THE REAL AND THE IMAGINARY. A TENSION EXISTS BETWEEN THE INTERIOR AND THE EXTERIOR.

THE PASSAGE OF TIME IS ILLUSTRATED THROUGH POETIC IMAGERY WITH SYMBOLIC REFERENCE, SUCH AS THE WATER AGAINST THE WINDOW, THE PITCHER OF WATER AND THE FIRST DREAM SEQUENCE.

THE IMAGERY IS ACCOMPANIED BY THE RECITING OF POETRY EXTRACTS. THE FEMALE RECITES TRADITIONAL POETRY, THE TENSION IN THE IMAGERY IS ECHOED IN THE TENSION THAT EXISTS BETWEEN THE TRADITIONAL POETRY AND THE FEMALE VOICE.

Pinhole Photography

Collaborative project with Helen Fox & Patricia Burke & Lorraine Cleary.

In association with Peter Morgan and with special thanks to Matthew Gidney, the Shannon Rowing Club and the Clarion Hotel.
This was an extensive project carried out over a period of three months.  We acquired the use of two buildings in limerick in which we converted a room in each into a pinhole camera.

The first building was The Shannon Rowing Club located on Sarsfield Bridge.  Our first task of blackening out the room was no easy feat.  We then had to work out exposure times and the size of the pinhole, which had to be precise.

The second building was The Clarion hotel.  This time we arranged the light sensitive paper on a curved surface.

The reality of being inside a camera obscure was by far the best experience, where you were witness to cars driving on the ceiling and an inverted cityscape.

The word 'camera' is the Latin word for room and the first type of camera, the 'camera obscura' meaning darkroom was just that.
